Quick verdict: For most teams Sentry is the default: richer product surface (performance tracing, session replay, releases), more SDKs and a bigger free tier. Rollbar is the leaner tool: faster to reason about, strong grouping heuristics and often cheaper at moderate event volume.
Sentry wins on breadth: performance monitoring, session replay and release health in one product, with first-class SDKs for every language you use. Rollbar wins on focus: grouping that rarely misclassifies, a clean interface, and simpler pricing math.
Both meter by events. Sentry's free developer tier is generous for side projects; at scale, costs depend heavily on how aggressively you filter. Rollbar tends to be easier to predict month to month at mid volume.
If budget is the blocker, GlitchTip is an open-source, self-hostable error tracker that speaks the Sentry SDK protocol — you can try the ecosystem free and upgrade to either product later.
Product teams that want one observability suite: Sentry. Small teams that just need errors grouped well for a predictable price: Rollbar.
