Vultr vs Google Cloud

Updated October 2026 · hands-on opinion, not vendor copy

Quick verdict: GCP is a full platform: BigQuery, Cloud Run, GKE, Spanner — managed services with no self-hosted equivalent. Vultr is raw compute, priced lower per MHz and spread across 32 locations. If you need the platform, GCP. If you need cheap, fast, boring VMs (and lots of them), Vultr usually wins on the invoice.

Raw compute price

For comparable 2 vCPU/4GB instances, Vultr typically undercuts GCP's on-demand price, and its High Frequency line uses faster cores than either provider's base tier. GCP counters with Sustained Use discounts and committed-use pricing — but you have to commit. For hourly-bursty workloads, Vultr's per-hour billing with no commitment is the honest advantage.

Managed services depth

There is no Vultr equivalent of BigQuery, Cloud Run, Spanner or GKE Autopilot. Vultr has managed databases and load balancers, solid for the basics. Teams that grow into data pipelines end up on GCP eventually; Vultr is where they start.

Network and locations

Vultr's 32 regions include many cities GCP doesn't cover — useful for latency-sensitive regional apps. GCP's backbone and private network performance between its own regions is better engineered.

Egress pricing

GCP charges meaningfully for egress; Vultr includes a larger allowance on plans. For bandwidth-heavy workloads (media, downloads, proxies) this line item decides the winner before anything else.
